Amanda Boyd
Amanda Boyd is a North Carolina native, moving to Carroll County, Virginia at age three. She never could find hair barrettes she liked for her two daughters ages six and three, so she began creating them. Now, her daughters are older and have begun helping create designs using different color combinations. An added bonus is they can sell them and go shopping for new ribbons and have a fun mother/daughter day.

I reside in Woodlawn, Virginia, with my husband, Ron, having relocated from Vermont about twelve years ago. We have three children, and eight grandchildren. I worked as a RN for forty-two years and am now retired. I have been knitting since I was ten, helping my mom knit mittens for my siblings. As I am self-taught, I have begun knitting more advanced items. My lastest accomplishment is teaching a knitting class at Chestnut Creek School of the Arts on how to knit two socks at once. In addition to knitting, I have a small business (Maddy Sews) doing alterations, quilting, and machine embroidery. Teaching these skills is very rewarding and gives me great pleasure. I can be reached at 276/238-9059.
Laura Frazier
Farm Girl ArtsMy work celebrates the lives of animals (wildlife, barn yard, companion animals). A finished sculpture represents a relationship of love, respect and gratitude between human and animal; for me, the maker, and for those who commission or purchase the pieces. When I begin a companion animal commission, I enjoy hearing about the animal: its personality, habits, activities and special physical characteristics. But what really motivates me is the love and caring that the person expresses in their description of their pet. When I sculpt, my intention is to communicate that love and the relationship in the finished piece. Occasionally, I have the opportunity to sculpt an animal I choose, like the Elephant, Black Bear and Deer in my portfolio. These are animals I admire and with whom I feel a connection. My own love of nature and all animals is part of the energy involved in the transformation of wool into portrait, from the care of my sheep and preparation of the wool to the needle felting process. Peggy Mabe
Peggy Mabe is a Carroll County native and was taught to knit, crochet, embroider and quilt by her mother. All her quilts are pieced and quilted by hand. Her sister and she grew up wearing dresses mady out of "feed sack" material with left over material being used in quilts. Her mother would use lace, buttons, rick-rack and embroidery so they would look as pretty as "ones you could purchase in town". That is why these items show up in her quilts today. All her pillowcases were embroidered with lace being sewn on edge. Growing up, she did these things because she had to, now she does them because she loves the finished items.

Bonnie Appleby
Bonnie and husband moved to Spring Valley, Virginia some thirty years ago. They are both nature lovers and are enjoying Virginia. Bonnie began pressing and drying flowers, with wildflowers being some of her best picks. She loves bringing flowers indoors whey they cannot exist outside. Her flower cards can also be framed and makes a wonderful gift. She also creates various size pictures, bookmarks and invitations. Her work can be seen at Carroll County Tourism Office in Hillsville, Va and also the City Gallery in Galax, VA.
Janice Axelson
I, Janice Axelson, enjoy decorative painting, which means I typically paint on nontraditional surfaces. Rather than painting on canvas or paper to be framed, I often paint on rugs, furniture, kitchenware, tiles, glassware, wood boxes, or murals on walls. I was trained as an educator and taught high school biology for several years. My love of biology shows up in my work, as I prefer painting plants and animals to inanimate objects. Since leaving public education, I have taught decorative painting for the Virginia Tech Learning Center in Critz, VA and for Patrick Henry Community College. I am a demonstrating member of the North Carolina State Fair Village of Yesteryear, Bull Mountain Arts and Arts on Main in Stuart, VA. I am a member of the International Society of Decorative Painters and the Triad Decorative Painters in Winston-Salem, NC. My work can be seen at the Arts On Main store, Mayberry Antique Hideway in Mount Airy, NC, Jacksonville Center in Floyd, Va and the Carroll County Tourism office, as well as in my home in Claudiville, Virginia.
Jane Blevins
Teaching high school art for the past 30 year in southwest Virginia has given me many opportunities to expose students to art and teach them to create their own. I have always considered myself an art teacher, not an artist. As tribute to the various colleges and the students who will be attending them, I began painting wine bottles and putting college scenes on the labels. I have always had a facination with light reflecting on glass, and painting bottles allows me the opportunity to experiment. Education has been my life's career and to reflect a former students success through a painting is rewarding. Now as an educator who is also an artist, I am finding great pleasure in providing students with unique keepsakes of their college experiences.
Ethan Choate
Ethan Choate is a Carroll County native and took private art lessons for six years while still attending school. He enjoys painting landscapes, animals and portraits using acrylics and has received multiple art awards in school art shows and in agricultural fairs throughout Carroll County. He has also participated in the "Gingerbread House" contest held each year at the Galax Library in Galax, Virginia winning several ribbons, including a first placing. Ethan also enjoys watching and playing soccer. His work can be seen at the Carroll County Tourism Office in Hillsville, Virginia.
Gayle Cooley
Gayle Cooley grew up in Carroll County, Virginia on a family farm located along the Blue Ridge Parkway. She began her art career at the age of thirteen when she began experimenting with some oil paints left over from a paint-by-number kit. In the mid-60's, she worked as a copy artist for Galax Mirror, Galax, Virginia, duplicating works of art for them. After an extended break from painting, she returned to her art in 2003, painting local scenes from the Blue Ridge. She is presently enjoying working on portraits, which opens a new field of interest. She exhibits her work at her home studio and also at "Something Different" in Mount Airy, North Carolina. She may be reached at 276/237-0720.
Lona Cox
Intrigued by the play of light and shadow, Lona Cox uses egg-tempera and watercolor for her style of realism, She has exhibited widely in Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and North Carolina, and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Purchase Award by Miller Brewing Company in the "Miller Plus 60 Exhibition". Her paintings are included in many private and corporate collections, including Wachovia Bank and Trust Co. of Greensboro and Winston-Salem, N. C., Workmen's Federal Savings & Loan of Mount Airy, Wachovia Bank and First Citizens Bank of Galax, Wytheville Community College, Wytheville Community Hospital, Radford University and Virginia Tech., High Point College, Virginia Western Community College and R. L. Persinger & Company of Galax, Va. Miss Cox was among the nominees for the "2nd Governor's Awards for the Arts in Virginia 1985". She is a member of the Galax Art Guild, Associated Artists of Winston-Salem, N. C. and is also a member of "Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway". She has an Associate degree in Business Administration from Radford University in Virginia and has a studio and gallery in her home at 202 W. Washington Street, Galax, Virginia.

Larry Fulk is a native of Mount Airy, North Carolina. After high school, he was trained as a Medical Laboratory Technologist and spent several years working in a hospital laboratory setting. He returned to school and received training and worked for remainder of professional years as a Nurse Anesthetist, retiring from Moses Cone Hospital. After my retirement my wife and I moved to Fancy Gap, Virginia and I was left with ample time to follow my life-long love of woodworking. I have always appreciated the look of fine cabinet woods and the craftsmanship it demands. My favorite woods are black walnut, mahogany and other domestic and exotic hardwoods with interesting patterns and colors and most of my enjoyment in woodworking comes with making furniture for my family. I have a special interest in the early American and Shaker style of furniture.

Morris Schlesinger
Morris Schlesinger VA MEDIA: Wood WHERE TO SEE MY WORK: Heartwood: Southwest Virginia's Artisan Gateway, Abingdon VA After reading about the craft of wood turning in a magazine in the early ‘80’s, Morris Schlesinger bought himself a lathe and tools and began “giving wood a second chance” as he says. Morris is one of a small group of wood turners in Virginia and of the less than 8,000 worldwide, from a craft that began in the Middle Ages. And while Morris considers himself a technician rather than an artist, he has studied with some of the premiere wood turners in the world at various symposiums as well as week long classes at John C. Campbell Folk School. As a full time U.S. Postal Service employee and Vietnam War veteran, Morris jumped at the chance to join the Freedom Pens Project, a nationwide effort to provide custom hand-crafted pens to American servicemen and women in Iraq. Morris’ contribution was 100 of the 20,000 pen goal. Schlesinger also plants thousands of trees each year. He says, “Wood is grown for a reason, whether it is for houses, heating or bowls. This is a way to keep the cycle going.”B. Todd Shaw
Todd Shaw has over twenty-five years of experience in residential construction and fine woodworking. He is also an author, professional speaker and the maker of Foggy Top Turkey Calls. Lynn Coffey
Lynn Coffey was raised by city parents in southern Florida but always leaned toward the old ways and yearned to live a simple rustic lifestyle. In 1980 she moved to the tiny hamlet of Love, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and realized the Appalachian culture was slowly ebbing away. Although she had no experience in journalism, for twenty-five years Lynn published a newspaper called Backroads which chronicled the lives and activities of the native people whe lived among. When she retired in 2006, the mountain people's plea, "don't let our stories die" compelled Lynn to compile the old newspaper articles into a three-volume series know as the Backroads books. The content of each book highlight the personal histories, crafts and daily activities of the vanishing of oft-misunderstood mountain people from our area.C. David Gelly

Jerry Hayes
Local Applaachian writer, Jerry L. Haynes, grew up in the Brush Creek section of Carroll County. After graduating from Fries High School, he attended VA Tech where he graduated with a Civil engineering degree after serving four years in the US Navy. Although he always enjoyed writing, he didn't pen his first novel until 2006 when he self-published "A Cotton Mill Christmas" followed by "The Cotton Mill". Both were loosely based upon growing up in Fries and are 1/3 fact, 1/3 fiction and 1/3 just plain fantasy. Next came two historical fictions "The Saga of Caty Sage" which is the epic true story of five-year old Caty Sage who disappeared from Elk Creek in 1792, and her family's fifty year search for her. "Mountain Justice" is based upon the aftermath of Hillsville courthouse tragedy when a Richmond journalist, after the execution of Floyd and Clyde Allen, travels to southwest Virginia to follow Floyd's final wish for him to "find the truth". Haynes has also written a program entitled "The All New, & Improved, You" which he presents as a motivational seminar. The author lives with his wife in Dublin, Virginia and can be reached at 540/994-9829 or at handh_services@hotmail.com.

Sue Lawrence-Nester
I have always been referred to as an “artsy-crafty” person. When a diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis knocked the wind out of my sails I turned to wire-working and beading under the instruction of Karin Saul. Since 2004 I have been creating art jewelry which I sell online and at local festivals. I have recently studied under Sara Sloan Stine and Marcia Macdonald at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art in Winston-Salem, NC. I specialize in three areas, wire-work, fabrication, and metal clay. Metal clay is quickly becoming a favorite because it is a new medium that offers endless opportunities to create unique one of a kind pieces. My creative process is based in coping with the pain and frustration of living with RA. Rather than let the pain control me, I control it by losing myself in my work, this gives a whole new meaning to the term "work-aholic". Each time I begin a new piece I have a vague idea of what I want to accomplish. However, 90% of the time the piece takes on its own energy and guides me to bring it to life.Elements Jewelry
